It's now been 2 weeks since I got my trial #Lumia950 and I thought I would again update on you on my experience.
This Pip follows on from my thoughts after a week of using the new Lumia - http://www.piptell.com/Home/Pip/4396
I have continued to take photos with this phone and I have to say I am very impressed. As you can see from the above pictures it really captures light very well.
I have found that when drizzling (as often happens in London) the camera struggles to focus on the default settings but when using the finer tuned controls I have been able to take some good photos.
I have found myself wanting to take more photos now than I did when using my Lumia 1020 and I put this down to the speed in which it works. No longer do I have to wait for the camera app to open or the photos to save. And because of this I can say that this is a better camera than the 1020, regardless of the number of pixels.
I have also tried out Continuum more extensively over the past week, last night I even used it to announce my latest project GuidelinesDev - http://www.piptell.com/Home/Pip/4397
Connecting a Bluetooth keyboard and using the phone as a mouse I was all set to finish off my commit to GitHub and write a Pip introducing the project. The experience was just like using a full blown PC and felt no different to my current experience as I write this on my Surface Pro 3.
As I said previously there are still things missing from Continuum but this remains the best feature of Windows 10 Mobile. It also holds a lot of promise for the future and Microsoft could well be on to a winner here.
I will be handing my loaner phone back tomorrow and I'll be sad to see it go. It's a good phone.
Granted, there are a few issues as I would like the battery to last longer and Windows 10 Mobile can still be a bit wobbly at times. The two might be linked. But, I am sure Microsoft will continue to address these issues and release another update to the OS soon. In the meantime they have been continuously updating their apps too which continues to improve the overall experience.
Whilst mentioning apps I think it worth pointing out just how much better these are than those found on Windows Phone 8.1. Microsoft clearly has worked to address the gripes of users, and there are still gripes, but things are moving in the right direction and fast.
Compared to my 1020 the Lumia 950 is a huge improvement. It's faster, cooler and lighter. But, even compared to other phones it's a good device. The camera is stunning. The new Windows apps make me more productive. The new features of Hello and Continuum are great and hold a lot of potential.
I'm sure there will be people out there who miss some of the apps not on the Windows platform (Snapchat!!!!) but maybe Microsoft will address that too over the coming months.
Having said all of that I ultimately would never own the Lumia 950 for in my pocket I have a Lumia 950 XL. I have been neglecting it for the past week in order to give the 950 a fair trial but I now can't wait to make use of the faster processor, bigger screen and longer-lifed battery.
The Lumia 950 has been a great phone to use over the past 2 weeks and it has only got me more excited to use my 950 XL. Thanks to Continuum I'm also excited to try out the Universal Windows Platform on more devices, such as HoloLens and the Xbox One.
Thanks Microsoft for whetting my appetite!
